Central to the spiritual life of the Celts was the natural world, certain elements of which they saw as manifestations of the longed for otherworld. Their sensitivity and strong response to unseen forces led to the reconition and creation of holy places; these have proved more constant than the beliefs and forms of worship. The religion of the pre Roman Celts seems to have been halfway between direct worship of elemental nature itself, and belief in spirits and divinities inhabting and animating natural objects and pehonomena.
